Bluford "Spicky" Mayo Wood passed away peacefully on 7 June 2026. He had celebrated the 94th year of life, having been born as a Christmas baby on 25 December 1931.
Spicky’s full and rich life began in the Lowesville and Piney River area, where he remained most of the rest of his life with the exception of his Air Force service during the Korean War, which took him across the US and to Guam. While in the Air Force, he qualified for a position of staff sergeant and received a certificate for marksmanship. A natural born engineer, Spicky overcame a lack of formal education through his innate sense of how machines worked. Racing cars became a favorite pastime. Spicky built his own car and through that experience became a master mechanic, developing the skills to start his own garage. He could disassemble and repair any engine or machine of any type. Later, he was Sawyer at Nelson Lumber Company in Piney River until retiring at age 62. In retirement, Spicky pursued his passion for the outdoors through fishing, hunting and riding in the mountains, as well as maintaining an immaculate yard at his Piney River home. In this chapter of his life, Spicky also taught himself golf and developed an excellent game in a sport he shared with family and friends. He was a great father, grandfather, great-grandfather and recent great-great-grandfather. All of his relatives will remember his wonderful storytelling at holidays and gatherings. Spicky was a special man who valued truth, hard work and finding the right way to do things.
He leaves behind the love of his life, Mabel Tomlin Wood, with whom he shared 68 years of marriage. They have three sons, Don (Patricia), Gary (Debbie) and Michael (Kristina). They enjoyed a host of grandchildren and step grandchildren as well as great grandchildren and the newest family addition, a great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin Wood and Zelma Campbell Wood, as well as his brothers, Warren, and Frederick “John”, and his sister, Delores.
Spicky was a lifelong member of Piney River Baptist Church. He was also a member of the local VFW and the Piney River Moose Lodge where he served as treasurer.
The family will receive friends and family at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home, Friday, June 12, 2026 from 6 to 8 pm, and at other times at their home. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, June 13, 2026 at Piney River Baptist Church, at 11 am. The church will provide a meal and fellowship following the service.
Memorial contributions, if desired, can be sent to Piney River Baptist Church, 1190 Lowesville Rd., Roseland, VA 22967.
