Carolyn Elizabeth Mattox went home to Jesus on April 26, 2026, at age 89. Carolyn was born to the late Lester and Frankie Fields on September 2, 1936, in Beech Grove, VA.
Carolyn met her husband, Carlton Mattox in 1956 at a community dance. They married on March 25, 1959, and went on to have three children, Keith, Diane and Scott, and made their home in Piney River, VA.
In addition to being a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Carolyn also loved working in her flower beds/container gardens, preparing meals for her family and serving as a member of Rose Union Baptist Church where she was actively involved in many areas of service. Carolyn loved to sing and was a member of the church choir for more than 60 years. She sang in many musical events over the years and was featured as a soloist throughout that time. She was also a member of many associations and held various roles in the church including the Women’s Missionary Union, Gideon Auxiliary, Kitchen committee, and Vacation Bible School. She and her husband served on a mission trip to Mexico where they assisted others in helping to build a church.
Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her. Her family remembers her as a woman who exemplified the virtuous woman and will forever be grateful of the example she set. Carolyn found comfort in verses such as 2 Timothy 4:7—"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Carolyn now rests in the arms of the Savior, free from pain and sorrow, rejoicing in the presence of the Almighty.
Carolyn joins her parents, Lester and Frankie Ann Fields; her sisters, Marion Brown, Gwen Black, Laverne Napier, and Sylvia Witt, and her grandson Austin Mattox, in Heaven.
She is survived by her husband, Carlton; her brother, Jim Fields; her children, Keith (Rita) Mattox, Diane (Rick) Crickenberger, and Scott Mattox; her grandchildren, Amy (Nick) Ellinger, Kimberly (Tristan), Kyle (Chelsey) Crickenberger, Megan (Quinton) Boyd, Hannah (Rocky) Fowler, Hayden (Sierra), and her great-grandchildren, Nathan, Christian, Marley, Lila, Raelynn, Brixton, Kimber, Easton, Waylon, Julliet, Maggie, Harlee, Stella, Ruby, Worth and Oaklen.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Rose Union Baptist Church by Rev. Brandon Williams and Rev. John Campbell with burial to follow in Jonesboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026, at Rose Union Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Rose Union Baptist Church, POB 45, Piney River, VA 22964, or to the charity of your choice.
