Curtis Delmar Mays

Curtis Delmer Mays, 61, of Roseland, VA, entered into eternal rest unexpectedly at his home on Friday, September 4, 2026. Born January 13, 1965, in Lynchburg, VA, he was a son of the late William Elmer Mays and Ella Mae Branham Mays.

Curtis attended Jefferson Forest High School and spent decades doing what he loved most at Riverside Farm in Roseland, VA. He made a career out of his lifelong passion for farming and raising cattle. If you saw Curtis out in the fields, you were guaranteed to see his dog, Teddy "Ta-Ta," right beside him.

He is survived by his daughter, Brittany Mays (Dustin); his son, Zachary Mays (Tiffany), both of Lynchburg, VA. He also leaves behind his siblings, Gail Branham of Thaxton, VA, Retta Mays of Shallotte, NC, William Mays (Teresa) of Lynchburg, VA, Shelia Shouse (Andrew) of Stuart, VA, and Whorton "Monk" Mays (Tracy) of Nelson, VA; three grandchildren, Clark Mays, Wren Haase, and Parker Mays. Additionally, he is survived by a special aunt, Thelma Branham, of Amherst, VA, who served as a mother figure for many years. As well as a large circle of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving partner of 14 years, Stacy Lawhorne and her son Jeremy Austin of Roseland, VA, whom he loved as a son.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, James "Jamie" Mays, and his sisters Anna "Anne" Branham, Frances Slaughter and Loraine "Lacie" Beverage.

Curtis will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality and a grin that usually meant he was up to no good. Though you never knew what was going to come flying out of his mouth, whether it was his unfiltered humor or his dedication to a hard day's work, he left an impression on everyone he met.

A service honoring Curtis will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Bethel Baptist Church in Amherst, VA. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM, with the service to follow. 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you bring a covered dish to share in a family dinner celebrating his life, just as he would have wanted.
