Fred Winston Wood passed on to his eternal Heavenly home on Friday December 27, 2024 at Lynchburg General Hospital with his family at his side. He was born on January 28, 1940 in Lowesville, Va. to parents Marion Washington and Effie Angus Wood.
Fred worked many different jobs as a young man including a few years at theAmerican Cyanamid plant in Piney River, Va. before finishing his career as a construction inspector for GTE telephone company. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1963 and served two years operating a radio communications truck in Germany. Fred was also a member of the Mount Pleasant Masonic Lodge #84 for more than 50 years. Fred was a lifelong member of Piney River Baptist Church serving as deacon, greeter and bell ringer, and chairman of the building and grounds committee. He spent many hours making sure the lights, heat and air conditioning, and wheelchair lift were operating correctly for the Sunday morning services. Fred was also a life member of the Piney River Volunteer Fire Department having served since joining in 1962. He held the roll of recording secretary for more than 40 years and was also treasurer for a period of time. Fred fought fires with the guys until his health would no longer allow him to do so but continued helping the department with fundraisers like the annual chitlin supper and making apple butter to sell as well as leading the quilt raffle for the quilt that was donated each year by the Little Piney Quilting Ladies.
Fred loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed many days with his friends in the mountains bear hunting and fishing for native trout. He and his friends also spent many warm summer evenings catching frogs in order to have a frog leg feast when camping over the Labor Day weekend. He loved spending time with his grandchildren Kyle and Maddie when they were young whether it was playing on the floor or travelling to see something interesting down the road. Fred loved people and approached life with a humble attitude looking for the good in all situations.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Myrna Floyd (Bobby), and brother, Samuel Ray Mays.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Vernie Tomlin Wood; son, Kenneth Wood and wife Christina; grandchildren, Kyle and Madelyn Wood; sisters, Betty Cash (Gene), and Bonnie Campan (Roger); brother, Ronnie Wood (Becky); several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a host of other friends he made along the way.
Fred will be greatly missed by the family and all who knew him but we can take comfort in knowing he is with Jesus Christ and has been made perfect again.
