Gladys Mae Smith, 88, of Arrington was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at her home surrounded by family. Born in
Nelson County, January 16, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Radford and Hattie Rucker-Briggs.
Gladys was educated in the Nelson County school system, and she was an active member of New Mount Baptist Church until she became ill. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, baking, reading the Bible and newspaper, putting together puzzles, quilting and playing cards with family and friends.
Gladys leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Isaiah D. Smith Jr. (Pat), Joyce Ross (d. Thomas - Tuck), Gloria Paige (Charles), Marvin Smith (Cindy), Madelene Ross (Michael), Rita Smith, Gwen Smith, and Linda Smith; 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren; and her devoted pet, Klifford “Little Man”. She also leaves to cherish her memories a brother-in-law, Gilbert Smith (Pam); sisters-in-law, Sadie Briggs, Benell Briggs, Rodella Smith, and Bessie Smith; two devoted cousins, Thelma Jordan, and Lindsey Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Isaiah David Smith Sr.; an infant daughter; siblings, Wayne Briggs, Nathaniel Briggs, Fayola Smith, and Radford Briggs Jr.; grandson, Ronald Clarence Ross; son-in-law, Thomas Ross Jr., and sisters-in-law, Ann Briggs, Louise Carter, Blanch Smith, Emma Smith; brothers-in-law, Clarence Smith, George Smith, James Smith, Nathaniel Smith, Ivanhoe Smith and Frank Carter, Sr.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 2 p.m.at Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston, VA. With Reverend Brown, officiating; Reverend Pannell, eulogy, Reverend Lucille Jackson, personal reflections and Minister Sadie Simmons, scripture readings. The family will receive family and friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow in The New Mount Memorial Garden.
Repast will be held in the New Mount Baptist Church fellowship hall.
