Samuel Preston Massie

Samuel Preston Massie Jr., 72, of Piney River, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2025. Born in Lynchburg, July 28, 1953, he was a son of the late Samuel Preston Massie and Beulah Mae Campbell Massie. He lived a life centered on work and self-reliance, values that guided most of his choices and shaped the way he moved through the world.

Papaw will be remembered as a man of routine, work, and independence—someone who lived plainly and honestly, leaving behind memories that are real and enduring.

Papaw loved the ocean. He found comfort in its openness and its steady rhythm—a place where things didn’t need to be explained and where he could simply be.

He is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline Thompson; his grandchildren Bethanny Moors Breanna Moors, and Jared Thompson; brother-in-law and close friend Mike Massie.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home.
