Thomas Jefferson Massie Jr. "Tommie"

Thomas “Tommie” Jefferson Massie Jr., 82, of Amherst died Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in Lynchburg. Born June 12, 1943, he was a son of the late Thomas J. Massie Sr. and Zella Mae Campbell Massie.

Tommie was a life-long member of Piney River Baptist Church and had attended Clifford Baptist Church. In earlier days, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, and always had a story or two. He was a longtime University of Virginia sports fan and especially enjoyed watching softball. He also loved music and was an avid fan of “The Little Mountain Boys.”

He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Braxton (Donnie) of Dale City; the mother of his daughter, and caregiver for many years, Martha Saunders of Amherst; sister, Patricia Wood of Piney River; grandchildren, Ashleigh (Heather), Kristina, Shaelynn (DJ), Aarron (Caroline), and Samantha (Will); great-grandchildren, Hadley, Evelyn, Noah, Luca, Caleb, Rylynn, and Isabella, and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Massie; his sister, Janet Saunders, and his niece, Sheila Wood.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Fairmont Crossing, and to Betty Morgan, for all the love and care that was shown to Tommie.

A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in Harewood Cemetery by Pastor Jeffrey Campbell and Deacon Wayne Massie.
