Warren Douglas Mays "Papa"

April 12, 1959 — August 28, 2025

Warren Douglas Mays, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Affectionately known as "Papa" by his grandchildren, Warren left this world on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at UVA Hospital at the age of 66.

Born on April 12, 1959, to the late Gene Wortham and Inez Julia Lawhorne Mays, Warren's life was deeply rooted in the land. For many years, he served as the dedicated farm manager for Silver Creek Orchard, a testament to his hardworking spirit and deep connection with the outdoors. While his work was important, his greatest joy undeniably stemmed from the time he spent with his cherished grandchildren and family. The memories created in his presence, filled with laughter, love, and the simple pleasures of life, will forever be treasured.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness, survived by his sons, Jonathan Mays and his wife Amanda (whom Warren considered a daughter), and Ethan Mays and his wife Sara; his brothers, Donald Mays (Karen), and James Mays (Della); his sisters, Debbie Prechel (Buddy), and Susan Stevens (Danny); his grandchildren, Brooke, Rebecca, Daniel, Braelyn, Paisley, and Jessah; his great-grandson, William; and a multitude of beloved nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends whose lives he touched deeply.

A celebration of Warren's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Greg McCormick. Following the service, he will be laid to rest in the family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the funeral home, offering a time for remembrance and shared stories.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the Piney River Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 33, Piney River, VA 22964. Your generosity will continue Warren's legacy of supporting his community.
